Questions, answered

Frequently asked questions.

What is a biopsy? +
A biopsy involves removing a small sample of skin tissue for the purpose of diagnosis, treatment or both. If needed, the sample is sent for histopathological analysis for confirmation of diagnosis and, if necessary, further treatment will be planned accordingly.
Are my moles safe? +
The vast majority of moles should cause absolutely no concern but, with 37 UK diagnoses of malignant melanoma every day, having your skin checked and looking out for any changes regularly is absolutely vital. Over the past 30 years, rates of malignant melanoma have risen faster than any other form of common cancer in the UK. Survival rates, however, are also amongst the highest due to a huge advance in early detection services. Most moles are harmless but, if you notice anything unusual or simply wish to have one removed, our mole mapping and removal service is designed to give you peace of mind and stop any form of cancer before it becomes an issue. Advanced technology means that we are now able to detect malignant melanoma in its earliest stage, and the illness has one of the highest survival rates of any cancer. If you have any new moles after the age of 30 or if you notice any changes in existing moles, seeking professional help is quick, painless and really can save lives. If necessary a biopsy can be carried out at The Private Clinic Swansea. A biopsy is commonly done if you have a lump or swelling of a part of the body where there is no apparent cause. In these situations, often the only way to confirm whether the area of concern is cancerous is to perform a biopsy to look at the cells under the microscope. If we believe it necessary after your consultation or if you are interested in examining a skin complaint further, we may undertake a skin biopsy to check there are no underlying problems.
Is a consultation required? +
All lumps, bumps, moles and skin lesions need a consultation before removal, so we can diagnose them and discuss the best removal options with you.
What happens if I need to be referred? +
If the lesion is suspicious of a skin cancer, you will need to take your report to your GP to be referred within the NHS.
Do you treat lesions that are analysed as benign? +
Yes, we can remove all manner of skin lesions, moles and lumps and bumps. Your practitioner will discuss the options with you.
How soon will I get my results? +
Usually within 14 days, however at busy times this can be longer.
